Attire for the Valentine
Giving Into the Day of Love

AND Magazine image
Valentine's Day is rapidly approaching – where did January go! And once again, I'm not prepared.

Not that I've ever been prepared for Valentine's Day. I am just simply not one to sport those heart underpants and the lace hanky panky fantasy bra-traptions, but do know what goes best on certain types of dates or non-dates. (My all-time best Valentine's Day that I've ever had was during my days of singledom. My girlfriends and I sashayed down Sunset Boulevard to the Hustler Store and spent the evening reading dirty books, giggling – cackling, rather – at the flimsy outfits and impossible sexual positions, and getting high on cappuccinos. No expectations, no pressure, no waxing in places that burn every time you take a step - just us and the sex books.)

However, there has to be a day when you give in to Valentine's Day, spend the pre-requisite amount of money on sexy new underwear, and try to appear attractive to the opposite sex. Right? Well, no, of course not. You can stay put in that apartment or house of yours, and pretend it doesn't exist. Or, you can veto it by wearing a black turtleneck and earmuffs. Or, you can jump right in, and enjoy it with the rest of them.

I'm at that stage where I say, why not? Why not make the most out of a day completely and utterly dedicated to love. Oh, those cynics say that everyday should be dedicated to love, not just one day, right?

Well, bullshit. Everyday is not dedicated to love.

And, sometimes men need a quick kick up the bum to remember how great we really are. Hey, it's not like we made this day exist. Saint Valentine is the culprit, and I say, best to honor a Saint by jumping in with the rest of the cherubs.

So, what to wear on February 14th? I'm asking myself this question just as much as I'm trying to help out the other lovely goddesses reading this.

The Girl's Day Out on the Prowl

I'm thinking trendy, subtle and sexy – but, something that makes you stand out from the crowd. Nothing too short, too low-cut or that screams “I NEED A MAN! PLEASE SAVE ME FROM MY SINGLE VALENTINE'S DAY HORROR!” Steer clear of current sequins trend, shoulder pads, denim on denim or leather shorts – and definitely stay away from fanny packs – no matter how much the fashionistas may try to sell you on this...please try to avoid. Girl's day out not on the prowl will have different rules.

What to try:

Black or printed shorts over opaque tights with subtle camisole and jacket. Red or black ankle booties. (Try <i>Alexander Wang's Apron Front Shorts, $395, Topshop's Lace Pointelle Cami, $28 and Jeffrey Campbell's Di High Heels</i>)

Funky floral or print dress with flats or flat calf-high boots and a cardigan. (Try <i>River Island's Peacock Printed Shift Dress, $54, and DKNY's Cashmere Silk Cozy Cardigan (above) $195, paired with Miz Mooz 'Chavita' Boot, $149.95</i>)

All white dress with big black belt, black opaque tights and black pumps. (Try <i>River Island's Belted White Shift Dress, $47 and REPORT's Signature 'Toluca2' Pump, $199.95</i>)

The Girl's Day Out Excluding Men

Wear what you want. After all, it's your day, and you have no interest in men or if they look at you. If you're secretly looking, look at above ideas.

Casual Date

This is the date where you are still getting to know the other. You like him, he likes you and love may not have blossomed, but you're hoping it might. This could also be the date where you have no idea if you like him, but you want to give it a try and you don't want to be date-less on Valentine's Day. You could be going to the movies, to a football game, or bowling. I say wear something form-fitting all over, but comfortable or a loose top and leggings. Jeans and flats are always a safe bet.

What to try:

Checkered Shirt (<i>All Saints' Quebec $120 or Alaska Hooded Shirt, $140</i>, is a great bet), black skinny jeans, and white lace-up sneakers (<i>Eco 'Converse' Lace up W Sneakers Trainers Shoes, $62.45</i>)

T-shirt or Crew Dress, leggings and boots (<i>French Connection's Bambi Crew Dress, $100, with Chinese Laundry's Tally Ho Boots, $199</i>)

Relationship Date

This is when you're in the relationship, you've seen the other at their best, their worst and every other moment. What you wear on the outside doesn't matter as much, since it's what's going on in the bedroom later that matters. It's time to excite the other in a new way. So, I've found a few key pieces that are a must.

What to try:

Lace-up panties (from the behind) (Absolutely in love with <i>Kiki De Montparnasse's Ingenue Corset Panty, $185</i>)

Corset that pinches and tucks in all the right places (<i>Agent Provocateur's Mysteria Corset, $650</i>)

Sexy, Classic See-Through Boudoir Bra (<i>Fleur Of England 'Keepsake' Dusky Grey Boudoir Bra, $111.79</i>)

Over all, the day's about love, right? So, try loving yourself first and make yourself feel good. If a nice outfit does that, then you deserve it.
