Fall 2010 Trend Alert

AND Magazine image
Wouldn't life be grand if you woke up, stretched your arms and rolled out of bed to a walk-in closet full of clothes in just your favorite colors and patterns? All of those unwanted items with boring hues, lurking in the ominous depths of your armoire out of resigned obligation would be long gone. In their place and hanging with purpose would be selected loved ones; special garments waiting for you to adorn yourself in all of their gloriousness.

What if I told you that along with this masterful haven full of favorites, it would not only be encouraged but fashion-forward of you to drench yourself, head-to-toe in whatever color, tone or pattern your heart desires? I bet you'd feel inclined to yelp with glee while dancing a little jig and fist pumping over your morning java. At least that's what I felt compelled to do when I learned about this fall's fashion trend of monochrome.

Yes, you heard correctly. It's okay to lavishly drape yourself in all yellow and parade yourself down the streets of Manhattan. It's high-fashion to sport an all orange ensemble while bar hopping on a Saturday night. It's considered fabulous to show off a suit composed of nothing but turquoise to that high pressure meeting at work.

Don't take my meager word for it, designing power houses such as Givenchy, Christian Dior, Tory Burch, Francesco Scognamiglio, Chanel, Chloe, Michael Kors, Cerruti, Hermes, Gucci and Mark Fast have all focused their needle and thread to this popular movement. Their work has been met with praise from shoppers everywhere aiming to stand out in a crowd; bright colors draw envious gazes, funky patterns create an over-the-top pop, and muted, more natural tones can add an aspect of class and sophistication.

Like anything, though, there are ways in which you can make a royal mess of things. Dressing monochrome is brilliant because it requires little thinking; it's wonderful for all the up-and-coming fashionistas out there looking to make their first stylish mark. It's also convenient for those that love getting dolled up but don't have an extra hour in the morning to plan the perfect outfit.

To ensure that you look your best with this trend make sure that your upper and lower garment are the exact same color or pattern. If you hastily throw together a banana yellow top with a mustard yellow bottom it will only spell disaster; you'll be begging to feature on one of those fashion police columns where they oh-so-discreetly black out your eyes and leave the rest of your body for verbal and written pummeling.

Once you have your outfit with identical colors, you can then start to add in your favorite accessories: hats, scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, tights, and shoes. These can be whatever color you'd like depending on what you're trying to finish out your look with.

Some like to punctuate outfits with a completely different colored boot or pump. Others like to heap on the gold jewelry to give it an over-the-top Versace look. If you're new to accessorizing my advice is to start slowly; pick out a couple staple accents and then experiment from there. Nobody wants you to strut the city streets looking like a cracked out version of Mr. T.

Many trends have a tendency to crash and burn just as quickly as they start (harem pants, anyone?) but monochrome can be done in a way to convey timelessness and elegance. Although you may not always want to leave your house saturated in cherry red garb, take comfort in knowing that you can lean back on all black, cream or white.

You may not wake up to a new closet full of clothes every morning but it will feel like it if you get creative with what you have. So, do a little digging and make a funky new monochromatic 'fit. While you're at it, dance a little jig and do a little fist pumping; it feels oddly gratifying.
