Michelle Obama
First Lady of Fashion

Of course, there was plenty of buzz surrounding the Obamas already. They had just won arguably the most epic election in our country’s storied history. The inauguration ball was a big deal on its own, but still, everyone was waiting to see what a certain someone would be wearing.

Michelle Obama made a statement.

She stepped out in a stunning white, one-shouldered Jason Wu gown, and simultaneously cemented herself as first lady and fashion icon. She had been making best dressed lists for awhile, but since that night the media has followed her sophisticated style with a tenacity not seen since Jackie O.

After her husband rose up as one of the country’s most prominent political figures, Michelle quickly garnered notice for her style. Before she ever set foot in the White House, she was named to People’s Best Dressed list, as well as Vanity Fair’s list of “10 of the World’s Best Dressed People.” Twice.

When she became first lady, the hype only magnified. Mrs. Obama’s fashion sense has taken on a life of its own. Often her fashion statements garner her more attention than her political life. She loves major brands, from Calvin Klein to Alaia, Oscar de la Renta and Narciso Rodriguez, but also frequently sports relatively unknown designers, causing media outlets to buzz.

Before the election, Jason Wu was an up-and-comer yet to strike it big in the industry. Enter Michelle Obama, who wore Wu’s designs not only to the inauguration ball, but also on a Barbara Walters interview special, a visit with Queen Elizabeth II and on the cover of Vogue. Since, his star has risen drastically, with several successful collections under his belt.

Michelle has given lesser-known talent some huge nods. Isabel Toledo, Peter Soronen and Tracy Feith are a few of the designers that she has worn out and about or to star-studded events.

Her fashion sense is classic, continually looking pulled-together chic at all times. Pastel cardigans, pencil skirts, A-line hems, and simple shifts are among her favorite pieces. She also sports plenty of sleeveless looks, causing a serious frenzy.

Who knew magazines, blogs and television would make such a fuss about bare shoulders? Michelle Obama’s toned arms have caused a stir around the world as her sleeveless style has been well-documented. She earned her signature quite quickly.

The media follows her with a lot of fascination, noting every style choice or change.

In January, Michelle attended the funeral for Jean Biden, mother of Vice President Joe Biden. Soon the internet was lit up with pictures and stories because the first lady was rocking a new hairstyle. Her short bob made waves. When an icon cuts her hair, people take notice.

And Michelle is taking that leap to iconic status, backed by her legions of fans. Her style compliments her life in the most fashionable way and many see her as a relatable figure; a mom, a wife and a working woman. She could almost be that mother in your social circle who always dresses impeccably, or that neighbor who never seems to have a style misstep.

Maybe. If you live just down the road from the White House, that is.
