Thats So 2010
Ten 2010 Trends

AND Magazine image
One of the pleasures a new decade brings is the nostalgia we get to indulge. We flip through back issues of Vogue, bring out old photo albums, and do a little spring cleaning of the ten years that came before.

As each decade passes, we find ourselves bewildered, at a loss for how to fully explain the nuances of what was undoubtedly a complex span of time. I felt this way when the 90s passed, not sure how to sew them together in my mind, despite being barely old enough to remember the first quarter of them.

As we transition between seasons, the time has come for us to assess what we’re wearing now. The following is a list of ten trends that will be remembered, for good or ill, as so 2010.

1) Fatigue Green: Everywhere you step you can’t see the forest for the green. This army-inspired hue is not just prevalent, it has saturated retail floors. Shopping now feels like guerrilla warfare in the rain forest. It does come in handy, though, as the newest neutral since mustard. It really goes with everything. Go ahead; think of a color it doesn’t go with. I dare you.

2) Football Shoulders: Assertiveness took on a whole new dimension with bulging shoulders on dresses and sweaters. The trend started high, seen on runways at Alexander Wang and Alexandre Herchcovitch, and found its way into department stores via Theory and Vince.

3) Jeggings: For those of you who may not be familiar: the jean and the legging got together, had a baby, and called it the jegging. If you thought leggings were on their way out, the jegging is here to stay. Wear them under a tunic, mens shirt, or throw a tank and leather jacket over them. It is the Everypant to go with every shoe. Booties, sandals, and heels, oh my!

4) Navy: Grey is the new black, red is the new grey, and navy is the new red. When did navy become hot? Somewhere between the death of the 80s Balmain sequin dress (even he’s moved on) and the return of Phoebe Philo to fashion.

5) Hipster Oxfords: Wingtip or capped, the woman who took these out of her husband’s closet and ushered in the trend should kindly put them back. Unless you’re going to tap dance, travel with a troupe reviving the Rat Pack, or you’re Janelle Monae, leave these in the 90s and move on. You’ll thank me eventually.

6) Blush Pink: Pink with a splash of grey seems to recur as a perennial Spring trend. Stella McCartney rocked this hue last Spring, and it’s back for another round. This time it’s chalkier and smoky. Pair it with khaki, navy, camel, or white.

7) Floral Dresses: Let there be flora! The gods of fashion decided there needed to be balance, so they created floral dresses to keep fatigue green warm on rainy nights. Together they are their own Eden where butterflies dance and owls sleep through the night.

8) Hair: Burt Reynolds rejoice: your hairy chest and eight o-clock shadow are back! Body hair on men, in moderate amounts, is making a comeback. For women, hair is longer, looser, and more natural. Especially as we move into the Fall season, when the 70s inspirations will kick into high gear, we’re going to experience the balance of body maintenance with body acceptance. Goodbye metro guy, hello Brawny!

9) Girl Meets Boy: Boyfriend blazers, girlfriend blazers, walk-of-shame mens shirts. The androgynous trend is so incessant we don’t even bat an eye when we see grown men on the bus in full make-up, a belted navy jumpsuit, and camel sandals with matching Chanel tote bag.

10) Volume: Size matters. Balloon sleeves, peasant blouses, and cocoon sweaters are everywhere. Brace yourself for the hottest Fall staple: capes. Ten years ago, we would have thought them too reminiscent of costumes and fairy tales, but Prince Charming, here we come.
