With Newt Gingrich's decision to drop out of the Republican primary it has becomes clear that
Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee in the 2012 Presidential election.
This means that the race between Mr. Romney and President Barack Obama has begun in earnest….and it's about time too. I had gotten so tired of all of the mudslinging that was going on during the Republican primary that I wasn't sure if this was a political race or middle school. While I hope that the tone of the race between Mr. Romney and President Obama is civil I have my doubts that their respective campaigns will manage to avoid all of the negative foolishness that makes me cringe every time I turn on the news and see a report on election season. I fear that instead all we will see is yet another example of the Idiocracy that modern American politics has become.
My advice to both candidates is quite simple. Instead of focusing on ad hominem attacks on each other (which happens all too often during elections) both candidates should focus on the actual problems that everyday American citizens are facing every single day. Although I'm not currently running for office personally, I did grow up in a family heavily involved in politics. What I'm about to say is based on the ugly truth that I have discovered during my exposure to many of the people who are involved in politics. What the People need to realize is that although there truly are some elected officials that do care about you, many others will sell you out if it means getting another term. I won't name names, because this is neither the time nor the place, but my family has witnessed the ugly side of the political process—firsthand compliments of some political opponents to my mother who intentionally sabotaged a good amount of the hard work that she was doing for the benefit of the community.
This morning I reminded my mom that although she is in politics to serve the greater good of society, there are so many other people out there in office that would betray you for an endorsement from somebody who had more influence in society than you. I plead with both Mr. Romney and President Obama to please be within that minority of politicians who really do care about the People and not just the power that comes with obtaining office in our society.
