Mike Dunphy was born and raised in Burlington, Vermont. He took his first trip abroad after winning a Buckham Scholarship to study English and History at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Immediately hooked on travel, he joined the Peace Corps after graduation and spent the following two years teaching English in Estonia. While traveling around Eastern Europe, he discovered Prague and instantly fell in love with the city, so much so, that he moved there in 2001. Returning to the States a year later, he began teaching English in Boston, where he stayed until itchy travel feet drove him abroad a fourth time to Italy. After schlepping in an Italian aqua park near Verona, he obtained a teaching position just across the border on the coast of Slovenia. A year later, he was back in Boston, this time as a Director of Studies at a private language school. A turn of events found him in Istanbul in 2005, teaching English at Turkey’s Bilgi University. It was in Istanbul that he published his first articles in Time Out magazine. Burned out by teaching and finding new life in magazine writing, he applied to Emerson College’s prestigious graduate program in publishing and writing was accepted and given a fellowship. In addition to taking courses in magazine writing, design, editing, teaching composition, and the publishing business, he also freelances for numerous magazines and websites. He graduated in May 2011 and is now looking for full-time work in New York City.
