Caught between the worlds of art and literature, Andrea Stephanie McPherson enjoys the best of both artforms by writing about art and culture. This daughter of an African American father and Filipino mother was born in 1983 in Manhattan New York, where her introduction to art was essentially in the womb, as her mother was a painter and photographer and father was a bio chemist with a passion for the opera and symphony. While living in Washington, DC Andrea graduated with a BA in English and Theater, worked with Washington National Opera as a supernumerary, participated in world renowned Capitol Fringe Festival and also worked as an assistant writer for W*USA 9 News Now. Full time, Andrea works as a freelance journalist and actress and has had writing opportunities with the Apollo Theater, Philippine News as a DC Correspondent, The Washington Informer as an Arts and Entertainment writer, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities as a contributing writer for their ArtNews Letter, Avenue Report and has worked as a web content developer for a number of business in Washington DC. In the summer of 2009, Andrea was cast as the female lead in the independent film, Greener by the Day, which is now in the running to be featured in this year's Sundance Film Festival. While working with Blue Artist Films and BET Gospel Music Video of the Year Award recipient, Pierre Walters, Andrea spent two weeks filming the feature length film with the cast and crew, often shooting for 16 to 23 hours a day.
As a newly relocated resident of Makiki, Honolulu Andrea continues to work with Grammy nominated Hip Hop artist, Christylez Bacon as content developer of his monthly newsletter, and shoots on a regular basis with Hawaii Five-0 and ABC series, Off the Map. Andrea also has a regular column with Examiner under their Urban Arts section, wherein she has interviewed artists such as Hawaii native Jake Shimakaburo, Paper Hearts Star Charlyne Yi and music artist, Sarah Jarosz whose music has been featured on ABC's brothers and sisters. Andrea likes to take an unconventional approach to art and this is expressed through her love of graffiti art on her website and blog, Urban Mediums (www.urbanmediums.com).
With special interest in the positive effects that the arts can have on youth in urban communities, she hopes to breakdown socio-economic barriers with her writing by calling attention to art's ability to uplift, inspire and unify.
